Bringing Beauty Back!

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. It was responsible for 8.8 million deaths in 2015 as per the World Health Organisation database.The survival rate for Nigerian patients with breast cancer is 30% versus 85% for UK patients. We should not live in a world where your access to treatment depends on where you live. 

This October, we joined the Bringing Beauty Back initiative alongside Professor Ifeoma Okoye, Helen Addis, Leanne Pero and Juliet Uzo-Agu to help raise awareness for breast cancer in Africa!

Day 1

On the first day, we held free screenings for both breast and cervical cancer, which had a turn out of 450 women! Out of these women, 13 of them were found to have breast lumps and 30 had cervical lesions. Out of these 13 women, 1 has been confirmed to have cancer. This is why accessibility and early detection is so important, as it saves lives.

Later on, we had a session where we educated students about breast cancer, allowing them to ask us anything they wanted! 60 of these students have formed a cancer awareness group, where they can continue to spread the word and remove the cultural stigma.

Day 2

On the second day, we hosted the Pink Day event where we had presentations from 3 breast cancer survivors and lecturers. 60% of the women who were screened the previous day showed up to the event, where they could take notes and ask questions. These women then took centre stage, showing us what they had learned by demonstrating boob checks.

We are so proud of the impact we have made, but this is only the beginning!
